About the Michinoku Coastal Trail

The Michinoku Coastal Trail is a long-distance trail developed as part of the “Green Reconstruction Project” promoted by the Ministry of the Environment to contribute to recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

Through collaboration among the Ministry of the Environment, local governments along the route, private organizations, and local residents, the trail was opened in stages from Kabushima in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, to Matsukawaura in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, and was fully opened on June 9, 2019, as a national trail exceeding 1,000 km in total length.

In addition to the magnificent scenery woven from the sea, rivers, villages, and forests along the Tohoku Pacific coast, the trail’s greatest appeal lies in the opportunity to experience the lives of people living in harmony with nature, as well as the history and culture that have been passed down through the generations.The warm interactions with local residents that arise while walking are also a unique experience offered by the Michinoku Coastal Trail.
