Q16. About how far can I go in a day’s hike, and how many days does the trail take to thru-hike?
The average person is said to walk at a rate of about 4 kilometers per hour (if walking on a flat, paved surface). We recommend a distance of about 15 to 20 kilometers per day to enjoy the scenery and meet local people as you walk. At an average of 15 kilometers per day, it would take 60-something days to hike the whole MCT, and 50-something days at an average of 20 kilometers per day. It would take more time to hike the whole MCT in a series of multi-day sections and day hikes.
Of course, everyone’s pace is different, and distance covered also depends on how long you plan to walk every day and whether you’re doing a day hike or hiking for multiple days. Distance is also heavily influenced by how strong a hiker you are, level of fatigue, road conditions, the terrain (is it flat, mountainous, how many ups and downs etc.), the weather and temperature, who your companion(s) are, purpose of the hike. We recommend that you get a feel in advance for how far you can comfortably hike in a day to decide how far to hike per day and in total for your hike.
