Q17. What sections are suited for beginners? Do you have any model courses that can be done in a day? Where do you recommend?
Courses in or near towns are easier to access and are often on paved surfaces that are easier to walk. It’s also easier to plan shorter walks in these areas. In some routes in Aomori Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, southern Miyagi and Fukushima, there are sections where a train line runs nearby parallel to the course, which means you can plan to start your hike at one station and end your hike at a later station, and if you decide to stop early along the way you can take the train back.
Courses with less ups and downs are also recommended for beginners. The Hiking Map Books have elevation maps and the DATA BOOK lists elevation levels for each point, so you can use these as references for what route to pick.
Routes with lots of ups and downs routes with mountains and passes and peninsulas that are further away from towns are a bit more difficult, so we recommend trying them once you’re more used to hiking.
Also good resources for hiking plans are MCT pamphlets and model routes made by satellite facilities and local governments/tourism associations along the MCT. There are also model courses listed on Trail Club’s website.
