The MCT route goes through habitat for wild creatures in many places including the Sanriku Fukko National Park. Creatures that live along the MCT include black bears, wild boars, giant hornets, Japanese pit vipers (mamushi), and leeches, and it’s not unusual to see these creatures on your hike. While there are towns and people living along the MCT, these people also live coexisting with wildlife. There are also plants and mushrooms growing along the MCT which are dangerous to touch, like Poisonous Fire Coral (Kaen-take) and Japanese lacquer trees (urushi).
