Kumi Aizawa
Born in Tokyo in 1969; raised in various parts of Japan and on the East Coast of the United States.
He moved around various parts of Japan and grew up surrounded by nature—near the ocean, mountains, and rivers—from an early age. He spent six years in the United States attending high school and college before returning to Japan.
Since then, he has been involved in collaborative creative projects—primarily through his architectural design firm—including editing magazines and books, producing films, and working on local art projects.Since 2011, I have been visiting the Tohoku coast, where I have been learning and spending time thanks to the kindness of so many people. In 2015, I became involved in formulating the management and operation plan for the Michinoku Coastal Trail, and I founded the NPO Michinoku Trail Club, which I continue to lead today.Fascinated by the joys of walking journeys, fostering a hiking culture has become my life’s work. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to collaborate with so many people.
I also serve as Representative Director of Earthquake Regain and as a board member of silent voice, the Trailblaze Hiking Research Institute, the RQ Disaster Education Center, Mother Architecture, and other organizations.
Appointed Visiting Professor at Aomori University in April 2021.
In 2023, appointed as an expert member of the Subcommittee on Natural Parks, etc., under the Natural Environment Division of the Central Environment Council, and as a director of the Natural Parks Foundation, a general incorporated foundation.
