There are plenty of highlights to see here, from the rugged scenery of the Kosode Coast—known as the “northernmost home of the ama divers”—where waves crash against the rocky cliffs, to the arched sandy beaches and the peaceful scenery along the Sanriku Railway line.In addition to fossils and amber found in the rock strata, salt-making experiences, and mine explorations, visitors can also enjoy exquisite local cuisine, such as scallops.The coastline, featuring a series of cliffs over 150 meters high—including Kitayamazaki—that are known as the “Alps of the Sea,” offers plenty of adventure that requires advance preparation and physical stamina, with river crossings, water’s edge sections that may be impassable at high tide, steep ascents and descents, quiet forests, and pitch-black hand-dug tunnels.There’s also an observation deck boasting the finest scenery in the Sanriku region, making this a route that will satisfy even the most avid hikers.
