Features of This Area

Walk through the plains and rural hillsides to encounter the daily lives of the people. As the historic heart of the Tohoku region, this area boasts many scenic spots and historic sites, including the landscape of “Matsushima”—one of Japan’s Three Great Views—as well as “Iogama Shrine,” the principal shrine of Mutsu Province and guardian of the Tohoku region; the “Ruins of Tagajo Castle,” the former site of Mutsu Province’s provincial capital;“Sue no Matsuyama”—famous as a poetic landmark—and “Soma Nakamura Shrine,” the site of the Soma Nomaoi festival. From the ridgeline at an elevation of 200 meters, you can take in a panoramic view of the Sendai Plain; in particular, from Mount Karou, you can see “Matsukawaura,” the southern gateway to the trail.You can also enjoy the canal where the Blue Impulse flies overhead, wetlands where migratory birds gather, and island-hopping in the Urado Islands. Another appealing feature of this route is the opportunity to sample fresh fruits and vegetables straight from local farmers, as well as freshly fried meat patties and freshly baked bread, as you walk along the way.

Requirements for Green Member Participation

You must meet either condition (1) or (2) below and obtain approval from the Executive Director.

(2) A resident of Natori City who is interested in the Michinoku Coastal Trail
