Take a walk through the coastal forest known as the “Alps of the Sea.” The trail offers breathtaking views overlooking sea caves, bizarre rock formations, and massive boulders. Although there are some elevation changes, the ever-changing vistas never grow tiresome, and the experience of wading across the streams flowing through the valley is a major attraction.When weather conditions are right, you can enjoy dynamic scenery such as the “Tide-Blowing Hole,” where seawater shoots up as high as 30 meters, and sheer cliffs, all while savoring the contrast with the beautiful, serene landscape of Jodogahama Beach—often likened to the Pure Land of Bliss. The seasonal seafood caught in the calm inner bay and the rough open sea is also exceptional.The route around the Shigemori and Funakoshi peninsulas—which include Cape Togazaki, the easternmost point of Honshu—is a challenging trek requiring hikers to carry tents and spend several nights on the trail, but the forests of giant trees and pristine beaches offer a soothing respite.
