You’ll cross numerous historic mountain passes, epitomized by the “Sanriku-hama Kaido,” which bears the memories of the journeys made by those who came before us. You’ll walk surrounded by the diverse, breathtaking scenery and profound natural beauty created by the rias coastline—including its intricate inlets, bizarre rock formations, and caves.You can also enjoy landscapes shaped by the livelihoods of the people—from the industries that have sustained the region, such as the remains of iron and gold mines, marble quarries, and salt fields, to the aquaculture of the inner bay (including oysters) and apple farming, which is rare along the coast.Because the area was severely affected by the tsunami, it is a place where you can feel both the threat of nature and the power of reconstruction; the route is dotted with remnants of the disaster, such as massive boulders carried ashore by the tsunami.
